Subject: Acadian Day Proclamation
Issue Date: November 14, 1995
There is quoted below for your information and guidance a proclamation issued on November 13, 1995 by the Honorable Edwin W. Edwards, Governor of Louisiana.
STATE OF LOUISIANA
EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT
BATON ROUGE
P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, under Title 1, Section 55 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 1995, is a legal holiday in the State of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, under the same statute it is provided that "the Governor by executive proclamation may authorize the observance of such other holidays and half-holidays as he may deem in keeping with efficient administration; and
WHEREAS, Paragraph 3 of Section 33 of Title 1 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950 mandates that whenever "the governor declares the fourth Friday in November a holiday, such holiday shall be designated as Acadian Day"; and
WHEREAS, a day should be set aside to commemorate the arrival in Louisiana of the Acadian people from the French colony, Acadia, following the ceding of that colony to England in 1713 and in recognition of the fact that much of the early economic and political development of Louisiana is directly attributable to the industry of the Acadian people through the cultivation of land, the utilization of Louisiana's natural resources and the interest of the Acadian people in political self-determination and American democracy.
NOW THEREFORE I, EDWIN W. EDWARDS, Governor of the State of Louisiana do
hereby proclaim Friday, November 24, 1995 as
ACADIAN DAY
in the State of Louisiana as a holiday established by law. I do hereby direct that the heads of all institutions, offices and departments of the State shall permit employees to observe this holiday, except that provisions shall be made for the efficient administration of all facilities, the operation of which cannot be dispensed with, in the discretion of the head of the institution, office or department where such conditions prevail.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand officially and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of Louisiana, at the Capitol, in the City of Baton Rouge, on this 13th day of November, 1995.
