General Circular No. 001652

To:                   Heads of State Agencies and Human Resource Directors

Subject:            2006 Public Service Recognition Week and State Employee Recognition Day

Issue Date:       April 18, 2006

This year, the nationwide celebration of Public Service Recognition Week will be from May 1 through May 7.  This week is set aside to honor public employees for their dedication and outstanding service to the citizens of our state.

Affirming pride in public service encourages more people to consider state employment as a career choice.  As growing numbers of employees retire in the years to come and agencies continue to do more with less, we must work together to recruit the most talented, qualified, creative professionals to state service.

We encourage you to use this opportunity to recognize your employees and educate the public about the work state employees are doing to keep our citizens safe, protect our drinking water, provide medical care to the indigent, help abused children, maintain our roads and bridges, and so much more.

Ask your Human Resources Directors and Communications Directors to partner to effectively educate the public on the many quality services your employees deliver to our citizens.  Tell the story of how they are making a difference in our communities.

For ideas on activities and community and media outreach projects, review these helpful resources, “How To Celebrate Public Service Recognition Week” at http://www.theroundtable.org/celebrate.pdf or “State Employee Recognition Day Handbook” at www.naspe.net/index.cfm?PageID=20

If you have questions or need more resources, contact Jean Jones at (225) 342-8272 or jean.jones@la.gov.  Please complete the attached survey so we can publicize your efforts and provide accurate information to the national sponsoring agencies.

Sincerely,

s/Anne Smith Soileau
Director
