General Circular No. 001523

To:                   Heads of State Agencies and Human Resource Directors

Subject:            2003 State Employee Recognition Day

Issue Date:       March 17, 2003

As a part of the nationwide Public Service Recognition Week (May 5-9), Governor M. J. "Mike" Foster has proclaimed Wednesday, May 7, 2003, as State Employee Recognition Day in Louisiana.  This day is set aside to emphasize the dedication and commitment of all state employees.  (See attached text of proclamation.)

Public recognition of state employees enhances the public image of state service and encourages more people to consider state employment as a career choice. By recognizing the special work of your employees, you can help promote public awareness of the many services you provide.

Please use this opportunity to the fullest to recognize the employees in your department who do a wonderful job for their fellow citizens each day.  Acknowledging employees’ achievements through various means is an excellent way to motivate them to continue high performance.  Ask your Communications Office to help you effectively publicize outstanding accomplishments and make the most of the Governor’s proclamation at your agency.

To get some ideas on creative no-cost or low-cost ways to appreciate your employees, see pages 6–8 in the “Guide to State Employee Recognition Day” published by the National Association of State Personnel Executives at: www.naspe.net.

More information about Public Service Recognition Week is available on the Public Employees Roundtable website at: www.theroundtable.org. Free materials, such as, posters and certificates of appreciation, are available on this website with an on-line application.  Another handbook containing ideas and suggestions for recognition activities is also available at: www.theroundtable.org/celebrate.pdf.

If you have questions or need more resources, please contact Erika Roberts at (225) 219-9450 or send an e-mail to eroberts@dscs.state.la.us.  Also, please let Erika Roberts know what activities your agency plans during Public Employee Recognition Week so that we may possibly publicize your efforts.

Attached for your information and guidance is a proclamation by the Honorable M.J. "Mike" Foster, Jr., Governor of Louisiana.

Sincerely,
