Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I apply if I am unable to online?

If you are unable to apply online for vacancies, you should use this application to apply to vacancies. Mailing instructions should be included in each vacancy announcement.

If applying via a paper application, please be sure to print and answer any supplemental questions associated with the posting and submit along with your paper application. In the job posting, the supplemental questions can be found on the supplemental questions tab and under “Print Job Information”. Failure to submit these questions could result in the rejection of your application.

2. What is LA Careers?

LA Careers is an online application system that the Department of Civil Service implemented on February 16, 2009. Applicants can now apply online 24/7 and review their progress through the application process via their profile. If you do not have a profile but would like to create one, click here.

3. Why do I have to apply twice?

You have to apply to test then apply to individual vacancies. Click here to go back to our test information page for details about Civil Service testing and testing procedures.

After you have tested and received your grade notice, you can apply to individual vacancies. With LA Careers, applicants can set up an application electronically and use it to apply to vacancies (no copying or mailing required!!).

4. How do I get my application to Civil Service for a grade?

Applicants will no longer send their application to Civil Service for a grade. They should apply to individual vacancies which are posted here.

5. I heard that test scores and test series have changed, what does that mean for me?

Test series numbers for all Civil Service tests have changed, but the tests are still the same.

Test scores for the COAST, PET, LEAPS and LEAPS Supervisor changed numerically; they were converted from percentile to percentage. If you had a passing score previously, you will still have a passing score after the conversion.

6. I am applying to a student worker position. Do I use the LA Careers application?

You may click here to download the Student Employment Application (SF-10D)
*Note: This application is used only for student employment.  It is never submitted to Civil Service.
