All jobs posted to DSCS Job Search are classified State positions.  There are other types of State employment, including unclassified positions, teaching positions, and so forth, but those types of State jobs are NOT posted to Job Search. There are two basic types of postings on Job Search:  recruitment postings and currently vacant positions.Recruitment postings.  These postings generally alert job seekers about the Civil Service scores that they will need in advance to be eligible for vacancies when they occur.  They often have no application deadline.   Recruitment postings may be very important to you!  If you are interested in one of these jobs, follow the directions in the Contact Instructions and Special Notes to get a score from Civil Service, so that you don't miss an opportunity when State agencies post their vacancies to Job Search.Sometimes agencies recruit for future vacancies in jobs that require no Civil Service score, such as Nursing positions.  Follow the directions in the Contact Instructions to send your State application (SF10) to the State employer for future consideration.Currently vacant positions.  These vacancies are being filled in several different ways, and it's important to read the Contact Instructions and the Special Notes carefully, and follow their directions.  Failure to read all instructions in a posting may cause you to be ineligible for the position!For more details on vacancy postings in Job Search, please read "IMPORTANT Information About Job Search Postings", linked on the front page of Job Search, or click here to read it now.

Jobs can be posted any day of the week.  They remain open for various amounts of time, set by the agency posting the position.  A two week open period is the average.  An agency may close a posting early if necessary.  Closed postings can no longer be viewed.

How do I apply for a job posted here?

To apply for a position posted to Job Search, you must read all the information in the How To Apply and Special Notes areas of the posting carefully.

The How To Apply instructions tell you where to send your State application (SF10), and may include information on the type of vacancy (e.g., open to the public, to State employees, etc.).

How To Apply instructions for jobs that Civil Service posts tell you to apply to Civil Service for a score for the position. You will report to a Testing Center to take an exam, or mail your State application (SF10) to Civil Service for a rating.

The Special Notes include information about the position itself, such as special pay or special qualifications required, licenses, travel, and work hours. They will also usually remind job seekers of the Civil Service score they will need for the position, when the position is posted by a State agency.

How do I know if I need a Civil Service score for this position?

Civil Service score information is listed under Series/Card and Selection Procedure.

If you need a score, Series/Card will display a code such as "4242/01" or "8888/A8", and Selection Procedure will tell you whether the score comes from a written test, or from a rating based on the information in your application.

If you do not need a score, Series/Card is blank, and Selection Procedure reads "Selection procedure not defined for this job". There should also be a note under Special Notes that no score is needed.

Please read the How To Apply instructions and Special Notes for each individual posting to find any additional information about whether or not a score is required for the specific vacancy for which you are applying.

If Selection Procedure, How to Apply instructions or Special Notes mention a written test, you must report to a Civil Service Testing Center with a completed State application (SF10) to take the exam.  For the details of Civil Service employment testing, please see "Testing Information" on our main web site, or click here to read that page now. If you have taken the specific written test, you may obtain a regrade for the particular position listed on the posting. NOTE: The How to Apply instructions may still require that you submit your application and/or proof of test score to a source other than the Department of State Civil Service.  Always follow the How to Apply instructions

If Selection Procedure, How to Apply instructions or Special Notes mentions "an unranked eligibility list", you may send your completed State application (SF10) to Civil Service for evaluation and rating.  You may mail your SF10 to Staffing Division, Dept. of Civil Service, P.O. Box 94111, Capitol Station, Baton Rouge, LA, 70804-9111; fax it to 225-342-2386; or drop it off at our Baton Rouge Information Office.  NOTE: The How to Apply instructions may still require that you submit your application and/or proof of test score to a source other than the Department of State Civil Service.  Always follow the contact instructions.

The How to Apply Instructions tell you who to send your State application (SF10) to. Sometimes you apply to the Department of Civil Service, but in other cases you must apply to the State employer who posted the vacancy. Read the How to Apply Instructions carefully to determine where you must send your applications.

When Civil Service posts a position, we send the names and scores of qualified applicants to the State agency with the vacancy after our posting has closed. The State agency then contacts applicants for interviews.  They will request an application (SF10) at that time.

When a State Agency posts a position, you must send your application (SF10) to the location specified in the instructions.

  You may see the term "Direct Hire" used in the Special Notes for some positions posted by State employers.  You will always apply directly to the State agency that posted the vacancy for these positions.When Civil Service posts a position, we send the names and scores of qualified applicants to the State agency with the vacancy after our posting has closed.   The State agency then contacts applicants for interviews.  They will request an application (SF10) at that time.

 About searching for jobs: You can search the job postings on this site by geographical area, by occupational group, by pay level, by the state agencies that have the vacancies, or by the type of vacancy. Begin by selecting the geographical area you want to search within.  Choose a statewide search by clicking the link Search Statewide.  Choose a region by clicking on the map.   Choose a parish by clicking the link Search by Parish, then click on the name of the parish that you want to search. You can define your search by selecting your pay requirements, an occupational group or career field, a type of vacancy, an agency that you are interested in working for, any combination of these, or none of them.  If you don't define your search, you will get all of the jobs posted for the geographical area you choose. You can sort vacancies by making a choice in the Sort menu.  If you do not change how the results are sorted, they will be listed according to the date that each posting closes, with the nearest closing dates at the top of the page. The drop-down menus will display only the choices for available jobs.  That is, if you are searching for jobs at the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, for example, you will see this agency in the pull-down menu only if it actually has a job posted. What if the menu doesn't show what you want?  If you do not see something that you are looking for, whether it is an agency, an occupational group, a pay level, or a type of vacancy, then there are no current postings that match your choice.

Pay:  Each job in the State system has a set pay level with a minimum and maximum monthly salary in one of several pay scales.  The pay of a job may be referred to by its place in the pay scale, as a certain "GS level" or "MS level", for example.  New hires usually begin at the minimum for the pay level for their job, but some positions pay above the minimum at entry based on special qualifications or demand for experience.  To see a chart of pay levels in the various pay plans on the Civil Service website, click here.   To search by pay, select the lowest pay minimum that you are interested in from the drop-down Search menu.

Agency:  An agency is a State organization.  Some examples include: Louisiana State University; the Department of Transportation and Development; Huey P. Long Medical Center; the State Board of Medical Examiners; New Orleans City Park.    To search by agency, select the agencies or agencies whose vacancies you want to see from the drop-down Search menu.

There are four types of vacancies listed on this site: Probational/Original.  These vacancies are open to all qualified applicants.  A person hired into a probational appointment will have to serve a trial period ranging from six months to two years, depending on the policy of the hiring agency.   If the employee's performance is satisfactory at the end of the probational period, the employee then becomes permanent.  An employee with permanent status is eligible to apply for promotional opportunities. Temporary - Up to 36 months.  These vacancies are also referred to as "job appointments".  They are open to all qualified applicants.  However, these jobs end after a period ranging from three months to three years.  Employees hired into "job appointments" never attain permanent status.  They do not become eligible for promotion.Promotion - All Classified Permanent Employees.  Only classified State employees who have attained permanent status may apply for these vacancies.  Promotion - Department/Agency-wide.  Only classified permanent State employees of the specific Department or Agency listed may apply for these vacancies.
