RSS Feeds

Standard RSS feed iconRSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" – it’s a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs.  With RSS you can quickly and easily get the latest updates from all your favorite websites in one place, rather than having to visiting them one by one.

How do I start using RSS feeds?

In general, the first thing you need is something called a RSS reader (also sometimes referred to as a news reader).  This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.

Web based RSS readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Gmail.

If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL (the Civil Service News RSS feed URL is http://rss.icerocket.com/xmlfeed?id=10977) of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.

Web Based RSS Readers

All you have to do is sign up for an account and you can add as many feeds as you want.  Some sites will  have buttons that allow you to add it to RSS readers automatically.  Otherwise, just copy and paste the RSS feed link into your  reader and you’re up and running.  Here are a few of the more popular web based readers:

How does RSS work in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007?

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 allows you to subscribe to RSS Feeds and then read content or follow links for additional information.  Whenever you see a link to a feed, or an RSS icon such as the one at the top of this page, just click. Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 will automatically subscribe you to that RSS Feed.

Using Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 to subscribe to an RSS Feed is quick and easy and does not involve a registration process.  After you subscribe to an RSS Feed, headlines will appear in your RSS folders.  Your RSS Feeds folders are typically located just above your Sent Items folder in Outlook 2007.  In Outlook 2007 RSS items appear similar to mail messages.  When you see a headline that interests you, just click or open the item.
