How Do I Apply For A State Job?

Step 1: Complete An Application (SF-10)

Applications may be obtained from our Baton Rouge Information Office, on the first floor of the Agriculture Building, 5825 Florida Blvd.  Our office hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Applications are also available at any State agency or you may download one from our website.

Please be sure to read the instructions provided carefully before completing the application, and provide as much information as possible when filling out the application.  You must also sign and date your application before you submit it.

Step 2: Obtain Your Test Scores In Advance

There are two scoring methods used in determining whether or not an applicant is considered for a job:

  • Written Test
Our Job Information and Test Finder tool will help you to determine if the job you are interested in requires a written test score and if so, which test you should take.  Click on the “View Testing and Application Information” link.  Look to see if “Written” is displayed as the grading method for a job.  If so, look at the “Series” column to determine which test series you must get a score for.   Then, take your completed SF-10 to the Civil Service Testing location of your choice to take the exam.
  • Eligible Rating
When “Eligible” is displayed as the grading method for a job, then you must:

·        Check to see if the job is open to application (see the Announcement Schedule for the job)

·        Send your application to Civil Service for a grade

If you are interested in a job title you find using our Job Information and Test Finder, follow the directions to get a score from Civil Service, so that you don't miss an opportunity when State agencies post their vacancies to Job Search

Note:  If you find a job title that you are interested in, please subscribe to our Job Subscription service.  We will notify you by email every time the criteria you enter matches a current job opening.

Step 3: Check Job Search For Vacancies

Vacancies posted on Job Search are filled in several different ways.  You can search the job postings on this site by selecting your pay requirements, an occupational group or career field, a type of vacancy, an agency that you are interested in working for, any combination of these, or none of them.  If you don't define your search, you will get all of the jobs posted for the geographical area you choose.

Step 4: Apply For The Position

It is important that you read the Contact Instructions and Special Notes carefully, and follow their directions.  When State agencies post vacancies to Job Search, they typically require that applicants have their Civil Service scores in advance.
