About Civil Service Tests

How to Apply:  When "Written" is displayed as the grading method for a job under "Testing and Application Information" on our Job Information and Test Finder page, then in order to get a score for that job, report to a Civil Service Testing Center with your completed SF10 application to take that exam, if it is open to application (see the announcement Schedule for the job).  At most of our Testing Centers, you will need to know what exam you wish to take BEFORE you arrive at the center.  Test monitors at our Saturday centers will NOT be able to give you any information about our exams.

About Our Tests:  To be considered for many state jobs, especially entry-level jobs, applicants are required to take a written test.  Test grades may be used to place applicants on job referral lists, often called "registers."  These lists or "registers" of successful applicants can then be sent by Civil Service to state employers with vacancies to fill upon the employer's request.  The employer can contact the highest scoring applicants to set up job interviews.

State employers may also view applicants for many jobs in the DSCS computer system, and contact by letter or telephone the people they wish to interview, rather than requesting a list from DSCS.  Many State agencies now post their vacancies for these jobs on Job Search, Civil Service's Internet search engine for classified State vacancies.  Applicants are instructed to apply directly to the State employer for these openings, and must usually have their test scores in advance.

Please note that registers are not maintained for all our tests:  there are no registers for the four exams used in the QUEST hiring process.  These exams are the Professional Entry Test, or "PET" (series 7333); the Law Enforcement and Protective Services Exam, or "LEAPS" (series 7500); the Law Enforcement and Protective Services Supervisor Exam, or "LEAPS Supervisor" (series 7700); and the Clerical, Office and Administrative Support Test, or "COAST" (series 7000/7001).  Our records will simply indicate the test taker's score on these four exams.  Positions that require one of these four tests are always posted to Job Search, and job seekers must respond to every vacancy announcement for which they would like to be considered.  Clerical postings may include a requirement for the series 7002 COAST Typing Skills test, so please read them carefully.  An applicant who has a score for any of these tests can easily search for posted vacancies in Job Search by searching on the exam's series number: 7333, 7500, 7700 or 7000/7001.
