Eligible Ratings

How to Apply:  When "Eligible"  is displayed as the grading method for a job, then in order to get a rating for that job, if it is open to application (see the Announcement Schedule for the job), send your application to Civil Service.  No written exam is required.

What is an "Eligible"?   Many state jobs require applicants to compete on written exams; however for some jobs, instead of being given a written exam, applicants are graded on their prior experience, education and/or training.  Such ratings are generally used for jobs which require applicants to have prior experience in a specific field.

Eligible Ratings give a score based on the applicants' experience and education as they describe it on the official state pre-employment application form (SF-10).  Final grades based on the Eligible rating will be either Ineligible or 99.  Eligible veterans may have preference points added to their scores.  Grade results are mailed to applicants a few weeks after we receive the application

Eligible Ratings compare applicant experience to the duties of the job applied for.  Consideration is given to the type of work, its complexity, the applicant's level of responsibility, supervisory control, and similar factors.  For some jobs, the recency of the experience may also be a consideration (for example, in the computer field, recency of experience can be an important factor).  In addition to experience, applicant education may be rated.
