HEALTH INFORMATION PROCESSOR

FUNCTION OF WORK:
To perform activities related to the processing, analysis, storage and
retrieval of primary and secondary health care records.
LEVEL OF WORK:
Experienced.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a Health Information Processor Supervisor or higher level health
information staff member.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May exercise functional supervision over lower level staff.
LOCATION OF WORK:

Differs from Health Information Processor 1 by the presence of experienced
level duties.
Differs
from Health Information Processor 3 by absence of advanced level duties.

Process requests for release
of information according to Hospital Policy and with Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) guidelines for attorneys, patients,
physicians, social agencies, etc.
Coordinates the record
retrieval for all unscheduled outpatient clinic visits, inpatient nurse
stations and the emergency room and follows up on records not located for
patient care in a timely manner.
Assist physicians and other
healthcare workers using knowledge and expertise in health record requirements
and policies.
Documents and tracks record
deficiencies and updates computerized database.
Reviews, classifies and
maintains health care records by updating patient files, filing, compiling
statistics and identifying and correcting record errors on reports.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in
which clerical work was a major duty.
One year of this experience must have been in the maintenance of medical
records.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Training in a business,
office machines, secretarial science or closely related curriculum in a
business school or technical institute will substitute for the required general
experience on the basis of one month of full-time training for one month of
experience.
Completion of a Secretary or
Executive Assistant program of at least twelve months duration approved by the
Department of Civil Service from a business school or technical institute will substitute
for the one year of required general experience. For less than completion of the program,
credit will be allowed under the first paragraph for substitutions. All training must have been resident study.
College training will
substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours
for one year of experience.
Registration with the
American Health Information Management Association (formerly the American
Medical Records Association) as a Registered Health Information Technician
(RHIT) (formerly ART), a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or a Registered
Health Information Administrator (RHIA) (formerly RRA) may substitute for two
years of the required experience.
NOTE:
Individual positions may
require typing. Persons applying for
those positions may be required by the hiring agency to take a typing test or
otherwise demonstrate their typing skills.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree
must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting
bodies: the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Incorporated; the North
Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; the Northwest
Association of Secondary and Higher Schools; the Southern Association of
Colleges and Secondary Schools; or the Western Association of Schools and
Colleges.
